The Twilight Series was written by the American author Stephenie Meyer and is currently a series of four books based on vampires and romance. In brief, the books are about a young lady who re-locates with her father to Washington and then finds that her life changes dramatically because of her love for a vampire.
There have been over 42 million copies of the Twilight series sold worldwide since they first became publicly available in 2005. Furthermore, they have been translated into 37 languages to meet worldwide demand.
She was named USA Today’s “Author of the Year” in 2008 and was also the largest selling author of 2008 after selling over 22 million books. And furthermore, in 2009 she was included in the Forbes Celebrity 100 list and entered at number 26. Its all great stuff for Stephenie Meyer!
And the idea for Twilight – how did this actually happen?
Well, back in 2003, the idea was merely a dream. But as some of us know and some of us have yet to find out, dreams can be incredibly powerful, and can come to be reality. This particular dream was about a young couple who fell in love. Nothing new there then, but the difference with this dream was that one of the young lovers was a vampire.
And for any of you out there who are aspiring writers but feel you do not have enough experience to really get anywhere; well, Stephenie Meyer wrote her dream out and it was published within three months. How is that for a great example to follow?
Once the novel was written and edited she then signed up with Little, Brown and Company a publishing house, for a three book deal that was to earn her $750,000. That book was then released onto the market in 2005.
After gaining huge success with the first novel Stephenie then went on to write a further three books in the Twilight Series. “New Moon” – published in 2006, “Eclipse” – released in 2007 and then “Breaking Dawn“, which was published in
2008.
The fourth novel – “Breaking Dawn” is expected to be the last in the Twilight series that is seen from the point of view of Bella Swan, the lead female character in the story. “Midnight Sun” will be the next book.
“Midnight Sun” was actually in line to be released shortly after “Breaking Dawn” but there was a leak of 12 drafted chapters on the internet so Stephenie Meyer chose to delay the release indefinitely.
So, how about the inspiration behind Stephenies’ creation? Well, as is often the case, “Jayne Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte – the English novelist of the mid 19th century is among her favorites along with “Anne of Green Gables” written by L.M. Montgomery the early 20th century Canadian novelist were both highly instrumental in her thinking. Having said this though, each book in the Twilight series was inspired by a different specific novel:
Twilight was inspired by Jane Austin’s “Pride and Prejudice”
New Moon – Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”
Eclipse – Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”
Breaking Dawn – Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “A Merchant of Venice”
All traditional favorite English authors.
